Hello everybody!

I have accepted a teaching position for one year at the Berklee College of Music International Affiliate, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, in Quito Ecuador. I am teaching lessons, directing ensembles, and teaching a class called the Rudiments of Music. I am looking forward to working with the students and faculty in this beautiful City!

01.24.08 | Mailing list!
Hi everyone!

I have decided t start a email mailing list, so if you are interested in getting updates on what I am up to, please sign up. Just shoot me a note from the "CONTACT" section.

01.09.08 | Published in Audio Basic
I have a feature section in the Japanese audiophile magazine "Audio Basic." The article includes a CD of arrangements of Gershwin songs, some articles I wrote, and a review on the CD. Sorry, only available in Japan, but if you are in Japan, or are passing through, please check it out.

10.26.07 | New Band! - Steve Whipple Sextet
I have a new group I am playing with that features the talents of Dan Karlsberg on keys, Anthony Lee on drums, Marc Fields on trombone, Brent Gallaher on soprano and tenor, and Austin Vickery on alto and bass clarinet. We had our first gig at Rohs Street Cafe a last week, and we are going to be playing there again soon, so please check back for those dates.

10.25.07 | Series of Live Recordings
I recently recorded 3 nights with different bands for a project with a magazine called Audio Basic in Japan. It is an all Gerswhin project, featuring arrangements I did for my new sextet, featuring Dan Karlsberg on keys, Anthony Lee on drums, Marc Fields on trombone, Brent Gallaher on soprano and tenor, and Austin Vickery on alto and bass clarinet. I also recorded an evening with Phil Degreg and Art Gore at the Blue Wisp, and another with Mary Ellen Tanner's group with Lee Stolar and John Von Ohlen. The magazine comes out quarterly, and each issue comes with a CD. Unfortunately, you can't buy them in the states, but if any of you happen to be in Japan, check it out if you feel like it. If anyone is interesed in these recordings, I may be able to get a few in from Japan, so let me know.

07.07.07 | To Younger Jazz Musicians
Teaching at the CCM Jazz Camp made me very happy. I was hanging out with some of my favorite musicans and best friends, some of whom I hadn't seen in a while. But more importanly, I saw that there still is a genuine interest in jazz among the younger-than-me generation. This is so important to the survival of jazz. I mean, think about it. If no one was interested in jazz, it will perish; like the grapes in my frige in which I lost interest about a week ago and is gradually turning into nasty, alcoholic rasins. So please, pleASE, PLEASE, go out and listen to live music. It is the best thing you can do to develop as a musician. There's nothing like good live music to inspire and stimulate you. And if you go out and listen to music, it will stimulate the music, the musicians, and the venues to keep jazz alive. As a musician, nothing inspires me more than an attentive audience who is really digging the music. There's also nothing as depressing as an empty house of an apathetic audiecne. It makes me incredibly happy to see young people in the audiece, really getting into the music. Don't let jazz shrivel up, ferment, and mold in the frige. Young musicians, the future of jazz is in your hands (and parents who support kids that are interested in jazz. THANK YOU SO MUCH and keep up the good work!!)!

03.29.07 | CCM Jazz Camp
More news in the summer jazz camp department. I will also be teaching at the CCM Jazz Camp (6/24-6/29). This is my second year teaching at this camp as well. This is a lot younger camp than Blue Lake, but it is a very exciting program for students in the Cincinnati area. Brad Goode is going to be the guest artist this year. I studied with Brad when he was teaching at CCM, and he is one of the most phenomenal musicians and teachers I have ever met. The students are lucky to get to work with him.

03.28.07 | Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp
I will be teaching at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp again this summer. I will be there during session 3 (7/24-8/5). I had a great time doing it last year, and I'm looking forward to doing it again.

03.21.07 | Performances in Japan
Hello everybody! Just wanted to let you know that I'll be traveling to my native Japan for some gigs. They're listed in the itinerary section. When I visited home last time I met a wonderful pianist named Tomomi Fukui, and she was nice enough to hook some gigs up for me. I'll also be playing duo with a singer named Junko Sumi. I've never done an entire gig duo with a singer, so I'm excited to see how that's going to work out. I'll be out of town Aprin 23 - May 10.

03.21.07 | Steady Sundays at Chez Nora
The Mary Ellen Tanner Quartet will be playing every Sunday staring on April 15. The band includes Lee Stolar, John von Ohlen and me. Lee and May Ellen have worked together for a really long time, and I can honestly say that they make the best vocalist - pianist team I have ever heard. I am always moved every time I play with them. And we all know that John von Ohlen is the king of big band drumming, but he is also among the best drummers in the world backing up a singer. It is an honor and privilege to play with these top notch musicians, and I hope you get a chance to come hear us play.
